This week we’ll be focusing on words that start with ‘G’ in our household. But unlike with the Letter ‘C’, which was also a letter that could be both voiced and voiceless, I’m going to include both the hard /g/ and the soft /j/ sounds.
This is primarily because I want to focus on the words my toddler mostly knows, but the list of only soft /j/ sight words is pretty small so I’ve filled it out with some extra words. Besides that, including both sounds will give a head start on the soft /j/ sound when we get to the Letter J.
G is for …
- Go
- Get
- Gem
- Good
- Giraffe
- Green
- Girl
- Giant
- Gray
These are words that can be easily picked out in books. And since the letter ‘G’ in both its capital and lowercase ‘g’ forms are pretty difficult to write, I will definitely be emphasizing the tracing activities for this lesson. You can download my free coloring and tracing pages below.
Letter ‘G’ Crafts
As you know, I always like to include ways to make the learning experience more interactive. In addition to reading P.D. Eastman’s ‘Go Dog Go’, there are a couple of arts & craft activities that can help you to emphasize the letter ‘g’ sounds.
- G is for Giraffe Craft: Create a giraffe craft using construction paper, markers, and googly eyes. Discuss the soft /j/ sound of “giraffe” while making the craft. You can also throw in some crafty ‘g’ words, like glitter and glue.
- Green Garden Collage: Provide children with green paper, glue, and pictures of garden-related items (e.g., grass, garden tools) or real garden items. They can glue these items onto the paper to create a garden scene while learning about the letter G in nature.
Well that wraps up this week’s lessons for the letter ‘G’. If you’ve gotten value from this post leave a comment below. Happy teaching!
