In this blog, I’ve compiled 10 simple words that start with the letter ‘K’ that every toddler should know. The letter ‘k’ has a hard, voiceless consonant sound. It is similar to the sound made by the letter ‘C’ when it is hard, as in “cat.”
You can show your toddler how to make the hard /k/ sound by pressing the back of your tongue against the soft part of the roof of your mouth and then releasing it. This can get a little tricky since the hard /k/ sounds similar to the hard /g/ sound of the letter ‘G’ (as in “go”), which is voiced and also produced at the back of the mouth.
So, let’s dive into this list of ‘K’ words that you can use to practice feeling the air burst out as you say the sound!
K is for…
- Kite
- King
- Key
- Kettle
- Kitten
- Kangaroo
- Kiss
- Kid
- Keep
- Kick
This list contains a mix of nouns and verbs. I do usually try to stick to nouns because they are easier to use in games and exercises, such as the free downloadable coloring and tracing pages below. But in this case, words like ‘kick’ and ‘kiss’ are highly relatable and easy to mime.
Letter ‘K’ Games & Activities
Just like learning any other letter, focusing on ways to keep the learning fun and interactive is a key part of my teaching style. Here are some games to keep things interesting:
- Charades: Once your child is familiar with the words on the list, see if they can act them out in a guessing game. Can they hop like a kangaroo or fly like a kite? Take turns guessing the ‘k’ words.
- Letter ‘K’ Collage: If you’re feeling adventurous with the glue sticks, try creating a collage of pictures from magazines or printouts of items that start with the letter K.
