Today, I’m going to introduce ten sight words that start with ‘E’ for your toddler. As I did with the letter A, these words don’t focus on a particular short or long vowel sound. Instead they are short, 2-3 letter words that your child can begin to recognize without having to phonetically sound them out. So let’s get started!
E is for …
- Eat
- Egg
- Eye
- End
- Elf
- Eel
- Ear
Finding words that start with ‘E’ to use as sight words can be tough. But these seven seem easy enough for my son to be able interact with since they are all words that he’s familiar with. To help reinforce his association of the words with images, I like to use coloring sheets or other printable activities. You can download the coloring and tracing activity sheet for free below.

As always, I try to weave in fun games along with the printable worksheets. Right now, I try to keep a more Montessori approach to the learning. You can use the following ideas for daily activities and games as a medium to teach these words in your homeschool lessons.
- Hedbanz – More of a variation on this popular children’s game, you can use flashcards and ask questions to try and guess the image. You can even create your own flashcards using a printable worksheet and construction paper!
- Matching Game – Create two sets of flash cards. The first set has the image, and the second set has the words. This works well if your child helps you to create the flashcards, so they begin to associate the written words with the images before playing. Then, cut off the word from the bottom of the flashcards. The pieces won’t be the same size, which will help them to distinguish between which cards have images and which have words.
